Base or Abutment? They’re Not the Same Thing

It’s a common question, and an important one to get right before any installation: what’s the difference between a bridge base and a bridge abutment?

The base is what the bridge itself physically sits on. For a temporary or portable bridge, that’s typically a combination of compacted gravel and timber crane mats. For a short-term installation, that base is often all you need.

The abutment is a different layer of protection entirely, and it becomes necessary in two situations:

  • The temporary bridge will stay in place for an extended period, such as a full season.
  • The bridge spans running water that is prone to flooding.

In either case, you need an abutment: loose stone fill or a poured concrete structure built around the base and extending down to the water’s surface. Its job is long-term protection, keeping running water and floating debris from washing away the embankment, eroding the base underneath, and leaving you with an unstable bridge.

A Note on Poured Concrete Abutments

Poured concrete abutments are a permanent structure, and they require full engineering analysis before anything is built. That analysis covers:

  • A hydraulic study modeling expected flood height and water flow rate.
  • A structural analysis of the bridge’s load rating and its actual weight.
  • An assessment of the load-bearing capacity of the surrounding soil.

Do not attempt to design a poured concrete abutment on your own. This work must be performed by a qualified engineer.

Protecting a Temporary Bridge Installation: Loose Rock, Not Gravel

Most temporary bridge installations aren’t facing a flood engineering problem. They’re facing a simpler, shorter-term one: protecting the embankment through the length of the installation, including the chance of a thunderstorm and a quick rise in creek levels.

For that, standard gravel isn’t enough. It washes away quickly. What holds up is larger loose rock, placed on the embankment beneath the bridge to preserve the load-bearing surface the structure depends on. In practice, that means:

  • Aggregate stone roughly 3 inches in diameter or larger, or broken concrete chunks of similar size.
  • Aggregate material not protruding far into the flowing water. 
  • Coverage extending at least 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides of the bridge, and more if the water is moving quickly.

That second point matters more than it might seem. Aggregate sticking out into the flow can cause the water to swirl, and swirling water is a leading cause of scour, the washout of embankment soil that gradually removes larger amounts of material over time. Keeping the fill contained on the embankment, not out in the current, is what prevents that.

Why It All Matters

The goal of all this material, whether it’s gravel and crane mats for a short-term base or loose rock for embankment protection, is the same: keeping the bridge firm and stable, both in normal conditions and when a flood brings a higher volume of debris through. Get this right, and the bridge installed stays exactly as stable as it’s designed to be.
